The start of #wolfden actually happened by
accident. Previously, I used to hang out in AnotherNet's #thecafe, where I met a good group of friends- jam,
Simon, cougar, NutShell, miriam (kid), Raphael, Reine(EPoo), Omni, and Spot. But
increasing conflicts with some AnotherNet operators caused me to spend less time on
#thecafe.
Anyway, one particular March night - March 21, 1996 to be exact- a few of my pals were
pushing me to register my own channel...I didn't feel enthused about it at all..but one of
them went so far that they regged "#dawolfden." After they did that, and after a
little thinking, I decided to just go ahead and register "#wolfden" for myself.
I mean, a few of my close pals could hang out there, if they wanted.
It's amazing that the same night that I registered it a huge group of people came into my
channel It was amazing the support I was getting for this brand new channel. If you want,
take a look at the log from that night. We grew in
popularity quickly. Not only did the old pals from #thecafe come into #wolfden, but we
gained a few new regulars- like root, bolt, cmdtrgd, Salamandr, and That_Guy. It was also
around this time that I started working on the #wolfden web page- which is still an
ongoing project. I felt we all were like a big happy family- and no matter what happened
to AnotherNet, we'd get through it.
Then in November 1996 something crucial happened...#wolfden left Anothernet. One of the
connected servers, Demoscene, was splitting from AnotherNet, and we were going with them.
So one night we split with Demoscene and there we met ami, who was a regular on #trax. We
hung out on Demoscene for awhile, until suddenly they all went down without warning and we
didn't have anywhere to hang out. At the time Simon was finishing up with aircd, his
server he'd been writing for quite a few years. We moved there after completion.
Throughout the next couple years, here have been a few get-togethers with #wolfdeners.
First, jam and I drove from Wisconsin to Washington and up into British Columbia to visit
Simon in Vancouver. Also, Omni and Levanna flew down to California to visit Reine,
WhtRabit, and Hatter. The big reunion came in August '98 when eight of us met in
Vancouver, BC for 4-5 days of fun and laughter.
Things went downhill from there, however.
After seeing many at the reunion, there was little to talk about day after day. We
basically ran out of things to say. After a month or so of this, I came to the crucial
moment when I became officially uninvolved in #wolfden any longer. I didn't bother
updating the website, I rarely went into the channel, and eventually I got off of IRC
altogether with my busy schedule and other demands. In a sense I regret doing it but in
reality it was the best decision for me at the time.
Although it's been years since that has
happened, we all still keep in touch. Quite a few of us use ICQ as a chatting medium and
periodic emails fill in what's going on. Also, we have implemented an online forum in
which #wolfdenners can post. We have also buried the hatchet with AnotherNet and we're all
getting along. The bad stuff is way under the bridge.
I would love to see #wolfden come back to what
it once was. For the time being, this website is devoted to keeping the memory of our
happy channel alive, for we all cherish the memories of the fun times we've had in
#wolfden. For many of us, it has changed our lives.
